Outdoor and Social: A hands-on success for Twist Distribution’s Damon Street

Representing two well-known US brands, Kelty and Sierra Designs, Damon brought their latest gear to the Outdoor and Social 2025 event at Newfold Farm, Edale, in the heart of the Peak District.

“Kelty is all about fun, family camping,” said Damon Street. “It’s vivacious, hardwearing, and great value. Sierra Designs is a little more technical—innovative, lightweight, and aimed at people into wild camping, hiking, and long-distance trekking. We’re not alpinists, but we’re serious about what we do. We’re about 70% of the way up the mountain.”

The three-day event brought together retailers, brands, and outdoor professionals for practical, on-the-ground training. Delivered by experts and supported by well-known outdoor brands, the event offers free learning, recognised certification, and—most importantly—a chance to get hands-on with products in the environment they’re designed for.

Damon was quick to champion the format: “This event, in my opinion, is exactly what the outdoor industry needs more of. It’s completely hands-on. The retail staff come here, they wear the backpacks, they hike in them, they try out footwear from other brands. That’s how they really learn. That’s how they can confidently advise customers in-store.”

He also praised the certification scheme for adding value to the experience: “People were really engaged. Some more than others, naturally, but they were open-minded and keen to learn. It gave me a chance to explain the technical features of the gear—what it’s for, what it’s not for. Hopefully, they take that knowledge back to store, share it with colleagues, and help consumers find the right kit. That makes for a better experience when people are spending their hard-earned money.”

Beyond the education, the social side of the event also stood out. With free food and drink, talks under the main marquee, and informal meetups, the event fostered genuine connection.

“What’s nice is that it breaks down barriers,” Damon said. “There’s this perceived hierarchy—between shop floor staff and managers, between managers and brands. But here, you’re just talking. Over a coffee or a beer, sharing knowledge without the airs and graces. That’s how the industry should work.”

With clear enthusiasm for both the format and the outcomes, Damon Street’s experience at Outdoor and Social 2025 highlights the power of immersive learning and genuine connection in shaping a stronger outdoor retail community.
